BETHLEHEM, Pa. (April 15, 2017) – Senior attacker
Theresa Shafron matched a career-high with five goals to lead the Drew University women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 Landmark Conference win at Moravian College on Saturday.
By the Numbers: With their first win in Landmark play this season, the Rangers move to 1-2 and 8-6 overall in 2017, and win their first away game of the season in their fifth try. The Greyhounds fall to 6-5 overall, 0-3 in the Landmark and 4-3 on the turf at John Makuvek Field.
Top Performers
• Shafron led four different Rangers with hat tricks on Saturday and recorded the second five-spot of her season and career. Two of her tallies came near the end of the first half to help Drew take a 7-2 lead.
• Three of Shafron's goals were assisted by classmate
Anna Fiorini, who finished with two goals and four assists for a team-high six points.
• Junior midfielder
Nicole Kinney, sophomore midfielder
Mia Campanale and freshman midfielder
Allie DiDario all netted three goals in the victory. For Campanale, it was her first career hat trick. DiDario also caused a career-high four turnovers to help the Rangers gain possession in crucial moments of the game.
• With total shots even at 29 apiece, the difference was Drew senior goalkeeper
Gianna Minogue making 11 saves. She helped hold the Greyhounds to a 6-of-14 mark on free position attempts.
The Difference: The Greyhounds scored two straight goals spanning halftime and trailed Drew 7-4 with one minute elapsed in the second half. From there, the Rangers went on a 5-1 run spanning the next 17 minutes to build a comfortable 12-5 advantage, capped by two unassisted goals by Campanale during live action.
Highlights
• Senior attacker
Kelly Dwyer started a three-goal run over the span of three minutes with her 11
th goal of the season 6:18 into the game. Three minutes later, Drew led 4-1.
• Fiorini and junior attacker
Sage Johnson took turns assisting Shafron toward the end of the opening half. Her goals sandwiched a marker by DiDario as the Rangers took a 7-2 lead.
• Senior midfielder
Morgan Mason joined the scoring party in the second half and briefly tied Shafron for the team lead in goals with 29 on the year. Shafron, however, would score two more to exit the game with the team lead at 31.
• Kinney scored back-to-back goals, one on a free position, within a minute of each other to hand the Rangers the 15-8 advantage with 7:13 to go.
Stat Sheet
• Both teams had 29 clearing attempts, with Drew posting a slightly better mark with 25 successful clears.
• The Rangers won the all-important draw control battle, 17-13, but conceded groundballs 27-23.
• The Rangers posted their highest free position goal average of the season by converting 7-of-10 from the 8-meter.
