Drew Claims Madison Avenue Challenge Over FDU in Extras

MADISON, N.J. (April 19, 2017) – The Drew University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to regain the Madison Avenue Challenge Trophy by defeating FDU-Florham, 8-6, at Dodge Field in a game hosted by the Madison Little League.

By the Numbers: Drew scored the first six runs of the game, followed by six straight from the Devils to force extra frames. The Rangers improved to 17-11 with the win and have now won the Madison Avenue Challenge two times since its inception in 2015. The Devils fall to 10-14 with the loss.

Top Performers
• Freshman left fielder Max Felsenstein enjoyed the most productive day of his young college career, batting 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs, including one in the 10th inning.
• Senior closer Tommy Broyles blew the save in the ninth, but rebounded with a 1-2-3 inning in the 10th to earn the win and improve to 5-0 on the year.
• Seniors Marc Cohen and Mike Miraglia knocked in runs in the first and third innings, respectively, to put Drew ahead 2-0 early.

The Difference: After FDU tied it at 6-6 with a run in the ninth, senior third baseman Jonathan Rodrigues started the game-winning rally with a one-out single. Following an interference call, a wild pitch and a walk, Rodrigues scored the go-ahead run when sophomore first baseman Joe Grossane drew a bases-loaded walk. In the next at-bat, Felsenstein drove home his third run of the day on a hard-hit single to left field.

Highlights
• Drew was aided in building a 6-0 lead by a couple of unearned runs in the third and fourth innings.
• Senior designated hitter Dan Pfefferkorn set the stage in the fourth with a one-out double to put runners on second and third for Felsenstein, who promptly singled up the middle to put Drew ahead 5-0.
• Junior pitcher Paul Roth received his first start of the season and went 6.1 with five hits, four runs (three earned), a walk and five strikeouts. He left the game in position to win.
• Sophomore pitcher Harry Cohen coaxed two popouts for the hold in the eighth inning with Drew leading 6-5.

Up Next: The Rangers return home for a quick turnaround on Thursday, April 20 at 4 p.m. against Franklin & Marshall College in a makeup from April 9.
