NYU Comes Back Twice in Two Wins Over Drew Softball

Breaking: Drew softball has cancelled its doubleheader at Montclair State University on Thursday, April 6 due to heavy rain. The game was postponed from March 16 due to snow, and will not be made up this season.

MADISON, N.J. (April 5, 2017) – The Drew University softball team held leads in both games, but dropped each end of a doubleheader against New York University on Wednesday at home.

The Rangers (3-12) held 2-0 leads in both Game 1 and Game 2 before falling 6-2 in the first game and 5-3 in a darkness-shortened, five-inning second contest. NYU improved to 10-6 with the victories.

In Game 1, junior catcher Heather Ronchi got an RBI groundout, and junior third baseman Lauren Mastropierro drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the first inning.

Senior starting pitcher Emma Agostini kept NYU scoreless until the fifth inning, when they pushed ahead 3-2 on three hits. Agostini completed the game, giving up 10 hits, two walks and six runs (three earned) while striking out one.

Drew jumped ahead 2-0 again in Game 2 on junior outfielder Brooke Adams' two-run double down the right field line to plate senior shortstop Meghan McGuire and Budner.

The Violets answered with a run in the top of the third before taking the lead for good with four in the fourth.

Drew got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from senior outfielder Phylicia Pellot.

The Rangers return to action on Saturday, April 8 for a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Juniata College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
