Baseball Bows Out of Landmark Conference Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 12, 2017) – The Drew University baseball team's record-setting 2017 season has come to a close in the Landmark Conference Championship.

The fourth-seeded Rangers were bounced from the double-elimination conference tournament with an 8-6 loss to No. 1 seed and host Catholic and a 6-2 setback to No. 2 Susquehanna.

Drew closes its 2017 chapter with a program record 26 wins and its second consecutive appearance in the Landmark postseason.

Senior Tommy Broyles hit a grand slam in the eighth inning against Catholic in Game 1 as part of a five-run frame and comeback attempt that brought the Rangers within two runs at 8-6. Sophomore shortstop Zach Lipshitz added two hits, while freshman designated hitter Matthew Lange and senior center fielder Marc Cohen provided the other two RBIs against the Cardinals.

Lipshitz continued his hot hitting in Game 2 against Susquehanna, who lost to third-seeded Elizabethtown 14-6 earlier in the morning. The sophomore shortstop hit 3-for-4 with a run scored. The River Hawks took a 6-0 lead and shut Drew out until the ninth inning, when seniors Jonathan Rodrigues and Mike Miraglia drove in runs.

Freshman pitcher Jeff Serin pitched five innings against Susquehanna and allowed just one run on six hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts. He took the loss as Susquehanna's Nathan Madden pitched a complete game with two runs and six hits.

The River Hawks tacked on to their lead with two runs in the seventh and another three in the eighth.

Elizabethtown is one win away from capturing the Landmark Conference title following their 8-7 win over Catholic in the second game. Catholic will play Susquehanna in an elimination game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. before the final games take place in the Nation's Capital on Sunday.
