MADISON, N.J. – On Wednesday night, the Drew University field hockey team wrapped up its season-opening three-game homestand with a matchup against Widener. Playing through a driving rain for the second time in as many contests, the Rangers (0-3) fell to the Pride (1-1) by a 7-0 count at Ranger Stadium.
Widener got on the board at the 7:16 mark, and the Pride extended that margin to 3-0 at the half. Three goals in a seven-minute span early in the second half then made it 6-0 in favor of Widener before the Pride's Kayla Herr capped the scoring in the 56
th minute. The Rangers had their best scoring chance late in the contest, but
Camryn Koch's (Hellertown, Pa.) shot hit the post.
Koch was also credited with a defensive save, as was
Mackenzie Hascup (Boonton, N.J.). Goalkeeper
Ryan Callaghan (Fountain Valley, Calif.) (0-3) made 12 saves, including stopping a penalty stroke.
Eliza Newlin scored three goals for Widener, while Jackie Daniels distributed two assists. Victoria Byrne (1-1) started in goal and earned the win. Sabrina Roberto played the second half and made one save.
After opening the season with three straight at home, the Rangers play four of their next five on the road, starting with a 1 p.m. contest at Keuka (0-3) on Saturday.
