MADISON, N.J. - Sage College edged the Drew University field hockey team 1-0 in a shootout to come away with a 3-2 victory Friday evening in Ranger Stadium in a game that was continued from Oct. 2.
The two sides had battled to a 2-2 tie when they initially met before the contest was suspended with 1:41 left in the second overtime due to lightning.
When the teams resumed action, neither was able to get off a shot over the remainder of the second extra session. However, each team was awarded one penalty corner apiece, with the Rangers earning theirs with no time on the clock.
In the shootout, neither side scored in the two opening rounds. In the third round, junior
Sami Strathern nearly slipped in a rebound from the right post but had her shot denied on a diving stick save. The Gators (4-11) then converted what proved to be the deciding goal, as Alexandra Lettre went 5-hole on Sage's third touch. Neither team was able to convert in the fourth round and Sage clinched the win by stopping the Rangers leading off the fifth.
Senior goalie
Ryann Callaghan turned aside a shot in each of the first two shootout rounds for Drew while Abigayle Greier made saves in the second, third, and fourth rounds for Sage.
The shootout was played under new NCAA rules in which the attacking player starts from the 23-meter line and has eight seconds to score.
The Rangers (2-15) close out their season on Saturday, when they visit Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference affair starting at noon.
