JERSEY CITY, N.J. – New Jersey City University pulled away late in the game and handed the Drew University women's basketball team a 65-48 setback in non-conference action Monday evening. Sophomore forward
Erin Frederick posted 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Rangers (6-3), who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
Turning Point: The Rangers trailed by only four (45-41) with 7:00 left after a lay-up from Frederick. But that's when the Gothic Knights (2-9) hit a pair of big 3-pointers to push their lead into double figures. Drew pulled to within seven (54-47) with 3:23 to go following a steal and lay-up from sophomore guard
Julia Ramos, but NJCU put the game out of reach with a 9-0 run. It was a close game early on, as the Rangers trailed by only four (17-13) at the end of the first quarter, one (28-27) at halftime, and three (41-38) at the end of the third quarter.
Top Performers: Frederick posted her second-best totals for the season in both points and rebounds. Senior guard
Hailey Stine contributed 12 points while Ramos notched 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Marajiah Bacon paced NJCU with a triple-double of 32 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 steals.
Stat Sheet: Drew and NJCU were nearly even in most statistical categories. The Rangers shot 34.5 percent from the field while holding the Knights to 34.3 percent shooting, and NJCU held a slim 41-40 rebounding edge. However, the hosts capitalized 21 Drew turnovers, converting them into 25 points.
Next Up: The Rangers take 11 off from competition before traveling to Florida for the Naples Tournament. Drew plays Rowan University on Dec. 29 before taking on Immaculata College one day later.
