Timely Hits, Clutch Pitching Lift Rangers to 6-2 Win In Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. – After having its home opener postponed two days by rain, the Drew University baseball played under pristine skies at Doc Young Field on Tuesday afternoon.  And the Rangers (3-1) put on an impressive showing in front of the home fans, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and getting solid pitching from Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) in a 6-2 triumph over Lehman (0-1).

Drew plated an unearned run in the second before scoring twice in the bottom of the third.  Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run, Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) made it 3-0 with an RBI single to right.  The Rangers then got two more in the third on Matthew Lange's (Glen Rock, N.J.) double to the gap in left center.

"Anytime you can score first, it just makes your defense relax," Head Coach Brian Hirschberg said.  "It also allows your pitcher to relax and just make his pitches."

Lehman cut its deficit to 5-2 with two runs in the fifth, but the Rangers added an insurance tally in the bottom of the eighth.  After Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.), Jayson Mitch (Easton, Pa.) deposited an RBI single to left field, making it 6-2.  Drew had a chance for more, as Lange walked and Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  However, Lehman pitcher Eamonn Maher got a couple of popups to end the inning and keep it a 6-2 game.

Castillo didn't need the insurance, though, as he sent the Lightning down in order in the top of the ninth.  He pitched four shutout innings to earn the save and retired the last seven batters he faced.  Castillo gave up two hits and struck out one.  Roth (2-0), meanwhile, earned the win after starting on the mound and tossing a solid five innings.  He allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

"Paul had a great start, but Jendy came in and shut the door," Hirschberg said.  "If you get relief pitching like that, you're going to win a lot of games."

Offensively, Drew was paced by Lange's 3-for-4 effort.  He also scored a run and knocked in two.  Felsenstein walked twice and scored each time.  Every Ranger reached base in the game, as Drew was issued eight walks to go along with eight hits.

Carlos Francisco had two doubles for the Lightning, who also tallied eight hits as a team.  He drove in a run, as well, while David Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Starting pitcher Jarret Oehler (0-1) lasted just 3.1 innings on the mound, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.  After Rich Frommelt struck out three 2.2 scoreless innings, Jose Albrincole was charged with one run, one hit and three walks in 1.1 innings.  He also registered a strikeout.

The Rangers are back in action on Wednesday, when they visit William Paterson (0-1) at 3:30 p.m.  Drew doesn't return to Doc Young Field until March 13.
