Sabbag’s Two-Run Homer Lifts Drew to 6-4 Victory

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) belted the game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Drew University baseball team (9-2) earned a 6-4 victory over Kenyon (0-6) on Friday morning at the Galdwin Sports Complex as a part of the Rangers' Florida Gulf Coast Spring Training trip.

After Kenyon jumped out to a 2-0 lead, the Rangers got one back on a Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.  Drew then tied it on Joseph Grossane's (Merrick, N.Y.) homer to left leading off the fourth.

The Rangers pulled ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth when Mike Pettigrew (Kearney, N.J.) ripped an RBI single that knocked in Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.).  However, the Lords went back in front on Patrick O'Leary's two-run single in the seventh.  Drew responded in the bottom of the seventh, though, when Sabbag scored on a two-out error.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk before moving to second on Max Felsenstein's (Glen Rock, N.J.) sacrifice bunt.  After Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) flied out, Sabbag cranked his second long ball of the season, a two-run blast to left that gave the Rangers a 6-4 lead.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) then came in and retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to close out the victory.

Sabbag had two of the Rangers' nine hits in the game, including his two-run homer, and scored twice.  Pettigrew also notched a pair of hits to go along with an RBI.  Joe Dahut (Kensington, Md.) started on the mound and went two innings.  He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out one.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) surrendered two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings of relief, while Mike Mancuso (East Haven, Conn.) gave up a hit and recorded a strikeout in one inning of work.  Vinny Doren (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) (1-0), meanwhile, tossed 0.1 innings, yielding one hit, and earned the win.  Williams notched his first save of the year after picking up a strikeout in the ninth.

For Kenyon, Mikey Arman finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Trenton DiFilippo was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Matt van Roemer scored twice, and O'Leary knocked in a pair.  Starting pitcher Alex Gow was charged with three runs on seven hits and two walks while also recording three strikeouts over 5.2 innings.  Eric DelRosso tossed 1.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit and a walk.  Jesse Bogacz (0-2) took the loss after surrendering two runs on a hit and a walk in one inning.

Drew has one game remaining before returning north.  The Rangers take on Misericordia (6-3) at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
