Rangers Fall at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The Drew University softball team (7-6) suffered an 11-5 loss to host Rutgers-Newark (9-2) at Alumni Field on Tuesday afternoon.  Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called off due to cold temperatures and the forecast of inclement weather.

After Rutgers-Newark put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the first, the Rangers got one on Vanessa Villahermosa's (Woodbridge, N.J.) RBI single in the top of the second.  However, the Scarlet Raiders added single runs in the second and third to increase their lead to 9-1.

In the top of the fifth, Drew loaded the bases on a Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) walk and singles by Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) and Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.).  That brought up Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.), and she lifted a sacrifice fly to center that cut Rutgers-Newark's advantage to 9-2.  After the Rangers scored another run on an error, Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) and Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) ripped back-to-back RBI singles that brought Drew within 9-5.

Rutgers-Newark tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, then got a one-out double play in the top of the seventh to close out an 11-5 victory.

Sirota and Mastropierro each had a pair of hits for the Rangers, while Sirota also scored a run and drove in another.  Starting pitcher Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) (1-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 12 hits with three walks and a strikeout over three innings in the circle.  Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) tossed the final three innings, yielding two runs on four hits while also picking up a strikeout.

For Rutgers-Newark, Brielle Mattielo finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Five different Scarlet Raiders had two hits apiece, with Morgan Schweitzer and Morgan Walizer each scoring twice.  Sarah Stiehler, meanwhile, was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Paige Masiello (5-1) earned the win after surrendering five runs (two earned) on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk in six innings.  Walizer pitched the seventh and gave up one hit.

Drew's home-opening doubleheader against Lehman (4-9) is currently scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m.  However, the twinbill may be postponed due to the pending winter storm.
