Rangers Take Advantage of Immaculata Errors In 10-3 Victory

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – On Monday, the Drew University baseball team continued its Florida Gulf Coast Spring Training trip with a matchup against Immaculata.  Leading 4-2 heading to the ninth, Drew (7-2), aided by four Immacualta errors, scored six times in the final frame to post a comfortable 10-3 victory over the Mighty Macs (1-5) at the Lanwood Sports Complex.

Immaculata struck first on Tyler Kmiec's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, but Drew tied it with a pair of unearned tallies in the top of the sixth.  After two errors put runners on first and second with two out, Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) roped a double to the gap in left center to even the score at 2-2.  The Rangers took the lead on a Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) sacrifice fly in the seventh, then picked up another run when Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) smacked an RBI single in the eighth.

The Rangers then broke the game open with a six-spot in the top of the ninth.  Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) had Drew's only RBI of the inning when he doubled home Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.), who reached on an error leading off the inning.  Immaculata made four errors in the frame (and seven in the game), allowing five additional runs to score, as the Rangers increased their advantage to 10-2.  In the bottom of the ninth, Greyson Avots knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to right, but Domenic Dellabarba was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play, ending the 10-3 Drew victory.

Grossane and Felsenstein each had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Rangers.  Felsenstein also scored two runs.  Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) added three runs, while Brian Dagostino (Southbury, Conn.) crossed the plate twice.  Mateo, meanwhile, was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) (2-0) made his first start of the season on the mound and earned the win.  He held Immaculata to two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work.  Mike Mancuso (East Haven, Conn.) was credited with the save after tossing the final three innings.  He allowed one run on five hits and struck out three.

Justin Dempsey and Tom Prato both went 2-for-4 at the plate for Immaculata, while Kmiec knocked in a pair on his homer.  Starting pitcher Gabe Hollenbach went six innings, yielding two unearned runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Zach Smiley gave up a run on three hits in 0.2 innings before giving way to Greg Grandelli (0-1), who took the loss.  He surrendered five runs (one earned) on three hits, struck out three and walked two in 1.1 innings.

Drew will now have two days off before returning to action.  The Rangers take on Penn State Behrend (1-3) at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
