Rangers Split On Final Day In Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Last season, the Drew University softball team won a total of nine games.  This year, the Rangers won seven on their season-opening trip.  Drew (7-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Crown (0-7), 6-5, before concluding the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a 10-3 loss to Albion (6-6) at the Century Link Sports Complex on Friday.

After Crown put up a four-spot in the top of the first, Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) cranked a solo homer to right in the bottom half of the inning.  Vera picked up another RBI in the third, when she drew a bases loaded walk.  The Rangers then tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth.  Vera and Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) singled with two out before Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) walked to load the bases.  That brought up Michelle Nestor (Hazlet, N.J.), whose line drive to short was mishandled, resulting in two runs and evening the score at 4-4.

Crown went back in front on Cassidy Valenzuela's RBI single in the top of the sixth, but Kailee Leathers was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play, ending the inning.  After the Rangers went scoreless in their half of the sixth, Rodriguez and Beyer started the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles.  Nestor followed with a double that was just fair down the right field line, tying the game and moving the winning run to third with no out.  Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) drew a walk to load the bases, then Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) deposited a walk-off single to left, giving Drew a 6-5 victory.

Four different Rangers had multi-hit efforts, as Drew recorded 13 hits in the game.  Vera was 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) also finished 2-for-4, and Beyer ended up 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.), meanwhile, collected her 100th career hit in the contest.  Starting pitcher Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) lasted six innings in the circle.  She allowed five runs on 10 hits and walked one.  In addition to recording the game-winning RBI, Burns (3-1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless top of the seventh.

Valenzuela tallied three hits, including a triple, for the Storm.  She also scored a run and drove in another.  Olivia Dols was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Lotte Ellis finished 2-for-3.  Lis King (0-4) went the distance in the circle for Crown, surrendering six runs (four earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

Vera went deep again in the top of the first in the Rangers' contest against Albion, but the Britons scored single runs in the second and third to take the lead.  After Drew tied it on Beyer's RBI double in the top of the fifth, Albion responded with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning to go up 5-2.

The Rangers got one back in the top of the sixth, when Adams knocked in Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a single down the left field line.  However, the Britons scored five times in the bottom half of the inning to increase their advantage to 10-3.  Albion then retired Drew in order in the seventh to close out the victory.

In addition to her home run, Vera had a single.  She also scored two runs.  Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) (1-2) got the start in the circle and took the loss.  She yielded 10 runs on 12 hits, struck out six and walked three in 5.2 innings.  Avella pitched the final 0.1 innings and issued a walk.

Lauren Bougher roped a pair of doubles for the Britons, part of a 3-for-4 effort.  She also scored two runs and drove in three.  Angela Hoffsis was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Grace Connolly finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Estacia Martinez recorded three RBIs, as well, and Camille Roloff crossed the plate twice.  Erin VanderVluct (4-3) earned the win after tossing a complete game in the circle.  She gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits, walked three and struck out one.

Drew will now have almost a week off before returning to action.  The Rangers visit Montclair State (6-4) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday.
