Drew Drops Doubleheader to No. 10 Moravian

MADISON, N.J. – On a picture perfect Saturday afternoon, the Drew University softball team welcomed 10th-ranked Moravian to the Drew Softball Complex for a doubleheader.  The Greyhounds (21-3, 10-0 Landmark) posted a 9-0 victory in the first contest before topping the Rangers (10-17, 1-7 Landmark) by an 8-0 count in game two.

After Drew starter Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the first inning of game one, Moravian struck for three runs in the second.  A pair of errors put runners on first and second with one out, then Brooke Wehr ripped an RBI single to left.  Two batters later, Janae Matos made it 3-0 Greyhounds with a two-run single up the middle.

It would remain that way until the top of the fifth, when Moravian put up a six-spot.  The big blow in the inning was Kat Spilman's two-run triple to right center.  In the bottom of the fifth, Drew, which had been held to one base runner over the first four innings, got back-to-back one-out singles from Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) and Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.).  However, Moravian starter Josie Novak finished off the three-hit shutout with a strikeout and a grounder.

Mastropierro's third-inning single was the Rangers' only other hit.  She finished 2-for-2 in the contest.  Hulmes (2-5) surrendered nine runs, only two of which were earned, on nine hits, struck out two and walked five in a five-inning complete-game effort.

For the Greyhounds, Wehr finished 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Spilman also reached base all four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks.  She drove in two runs and scored another.  Lauren Goetz, meanwhile, crossed the plate twice.  Novak (10-2) struck out six in the shutout.

In game two, Moravain scored two in the second before adding an unearned tally in the third.  The Greyhounds increased their advantage to 6-0 with a three-spot in the fourth, then notched single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Drew, meanwhile, managed just two hits in the contest.  Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) led off the second with a clean single to right, while Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) doubled to start the fourth.  She moved to third on Sirota's groundout, but was left stranded.

Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) (3-3) went the distance in the circle for the Rangers.  She yielded eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits and walked one.

Moravian, which hasn't lost since March 4, extended its winning streak to 19 straight games with the doubleheader sweep.  Wehr went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Greyhounds in game two, while Spilman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Maddisen Bieber also recorded two hits, and Madison Shaneberger scored twice.  Amanda Carisone (11-1) struck out five in the two-hit shutout.

The Rangers return to action on Tuesday, when they visit Hunter (10-10) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.  It will be Drew's final road non-conference twinbill of the season.
