Drew Drops Series Finale at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Drew University baseball team played the rubber game of a Landmark Conference series at Moravian on Sunday afternoon.  After the teams split a twinbill on Saturday, the Greyhounds (16-13, 9-6 Landmark) notched a 6-2 victory over the Rangers (15-10, 5-4 Landmark) in the series finale at Gillespie Field.

Moravian scored two runs in the bottom of the first, then increased its lead to 3-0 on Mike Mittl's sacrifice fly in the third.  Drew got on the board in the top of the fifth when Bryan Reagle's (Easton, Pa.) groundout knocked in Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.), who had doubled.

However, the Greyhounds responded with a two-spot in their half of the fifth to go up 5-1.  A Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) RBI single in the top of the sixth brought Drew within 5-2, but Moravian picked up another run in the eighth before retiring the Rangers in order in the ninth to close out a 6-2 win and take the series.

Lipshitz was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jayson Mitch (Easton, Pa.) also finished 2-for-4.  Eric DiPietro's (Devon, Pa.) double was the Rangers' only other hit in the contest.  Starting pitcher Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.) (2-1) took the loss after yielding five runs (four earned) and six hits in 4.2 innings.  He struck out two and walked one.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) tossed the final 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

For the Greyhounds, Mittl went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Logan Welles was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Chase Rogers finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Ian Csencsits and Austin Markowski, meanwhile, each scored twice for Moravian.  Dan Morrin (2-2) pitched a complete game, surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out 11 without issuing a walk.

After playing nine games in nine days, the Rangers will have Monday off before returning to action.  Drew's next contest is at Staten Island (9-13) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
