Hunter Takes Two From Rangers

MADISON, N.J. – In a doubleheader that was shifted from the road to the Drew Softball Complex, the Drew University softball team suffered a pair of losses to Hunter on Wednesday afternoon.  After taking the opener by a 2-1 count, the Hawks (12-12) rallied for four runs in the seventh to post a 12-9 victory over the Rangers (10-19) in game two.

Hunter scored twice in the first inning of game one.  Jamie Durso walked before moving to third on Stefanie Abolt's double to left and scoring on an RBI single by Alana Vezza.  Vezza then stole second and the throw went into center field, allowing Abolt to come around and giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Drew cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the third.  Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J.) ripped a two-out single to left and came around on Jasmine Vera's (Dumont, N.J.) RBI double.

The Rangers then had a chance to walk-off with a victory in the bottom of the seventh.  Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to center and Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) followed with a single to left.  After a groundout moved the runners over, pinch hitter Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) sent a chopper towards third.  Hunter got the out at home on the play, putting runners on the corners with two down.  The Hawks then opted to walk Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) and load the bases for Villahermosa, and she popped up behind first for the final out in Hunter's 2-1 victory.

Ronchi, Villahermosa and Vera (the 1-2-3 hitters in the lineup) combined for six of Drew's eight hits in game one.  Ronchi finished 3-for-3 with a walk, while Vera was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Villahermosa scored the Rangers' only run.  Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) (3-4) was solid in the circle.  She tossed a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Colleen McCoy had two hits for the Hawks, while Durso and Abolt each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Nicole Guzzone (5-3) went the distance in the circle, surrendering one run on eight hits while striking out one and walking one.

Sirota gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in game two with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the first.  Drew added two more in the second, as Villahermosa and Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) each knocked an RBI single.

After Hunter responded with a four-spot (aided by three Drew errors) in the top of the third, the Rangers regained the lead on Raquel Cabrera's (Hawthorne, N.J.) RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.  The Hawks put up another four-run inning in the fourth, though, to go ahead 8-5.

A leadoff single by Sirota in the bottom of the fifth started a four-run rally that gave the lead back to the Rangers.  After Cabrera singled to put runners on first and second, Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) crushed a triple deep to center that brought Drew within 8-7.  Villahermosa followed with an RBI double to right before Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) put the Rangers in front, 9-8, with a single to the gap in right center.

It would remain that way until the top of the seventh, when Hunter scored four times to take a 12-9 advantage.  The Rangers then went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, as the Hawks completed the doubleheader sweep with the comeback victory.

As a team, the Rangers tallied 15 hits in game two, with Villahermosa and Sirota each going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Adams, meanwhile, was moved into the leadoff spot and responded with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.  Cabrera also contributed a pair of hits to go along with an RBI and a run scored.  Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) (2-6) went the distance in the circle, yielding 12 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits.  She walked five and struck out three.

Abolt reached base all five times for the Hawks, finishing 3-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and three RBIs.  Brittney Salvador was 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Vezza ended up 2-for-2 with a pair of sacrifices.  She drove in three runs and scored another.  McCoy and Durso, meanwhile, each crossed the plate twice in game two.  Starting pitcher Leanna Donohue lasted 1.1 innings and was charged with four runs on four hits and three walks.  After tossing a complete game in the opener, Guzzone threw 3.1 innings of relief in game two.  She surrendered five runs on nine hits and struck out one.  Diana Ferreira (2-1) earned the win after holding the Rangers to just two hits over 2.1 scoreless innings.

On Thursday, the Rangers wrap up a 10-game homestand with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Saint Elizabeth (12-8).
