Drew Drops Pair of Close Contests at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Drew University softball team played its final road doubleheader of the season on Saturday afternoon.  After dropping a 2-0 decision in the opener, the Rangers (10-21, 1-9 Landmark) suffered a 5-4 loss to Scranton (24-6, 8-2 Landmark) in game two at Magis Field.

Game one was a classic pitchers' duel between Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Morgan Rentzheimer, as the teams combined for just eight hits in the contest.

Scranton broke through for the game's only runs in the bottom of the sixth, when pinch hitter Meaghan Dowdell roped a two-out, two-run single.  Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) led off the seventh with a single through the right side, but Rentzheimer retired the next three batters to close out a 2-0 victory for the Royals.

Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) had a double, while Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) and Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) singled for the only other Drew hits.  Burns (3-8) gave up two unearned runs on four hits, struck out two and walked three in six innings.

In addition to striking out seven and walking one in a four-hit shutout, Rentzheimer (10-4) pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking one.  She also went 1-for-2 with a run scored at the plate.  Maggie Donnelly was also 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Molly Hampsey had the other Scranton hit.

After the Royals jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game two, the Rangers put up a four-spot in the fourth to tie it.  Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) started the rally with an infield single, and Rodriguez followed with a double.  Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) and Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) each roped an RBI single before Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) smacked a game-tying two-run triple.

Rentzheimer put Scranton back in front, 5-4, with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.  Drew put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, though, as Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) knocked a one-out single.  However, a foul popup and a groundout followed, as the Royals completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory.

Sirota finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in game two, while Vera was 1-for-3 with her two run triple.  In addition to going 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, Hulmes (2-7) took the loss in the circle.  She allowed two runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked three in relief of Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.), who yielded three one and four hits with a walk in one inning of work.

For the Royals, Mackenzie Duffy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest.  Megan Zinn was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Rentzheimer finished 2-for-2 with the game-winning RBI.  In addition to going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, Jennifer Sweeney (12-2) hurled a complete game in the circle.  She surrendered four runs on eight hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Drew begins the final week of the 2018 campaign by hosting Purchase (5-13) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
