Rangers Swept In Final Non-Conference Twinbill

MADISON, N.J. – On Thursday afternoon, the Drew University softball team concluded its non-conference schedule by traveling across town for a doubleheader with FDU-Florham.  In their final road games of the season, the Rangers (10-23) dropped both ends of the twinbill, losing game one by a 6-0 count before the Devils (18-16) posted a 2-1 win in the nightcap at McManus Field.

It was the second doubleheader between the teams this season, and the games were only added to Drew's schedule after a pair of cancellations earlier in the week.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when FDU-Florham got on the board with an unearned tally.  The Devils then increased their lead to 3-0 on Michelle Mangini's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.  Rebecca DeCarlo added an RBI double in the fifth, while Frannie Jarin hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

The Rangers were held to five hits, including doubles by Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) and Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.).  Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) went 2-for-3, and Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) accounted for the other Drew hit with a fourth-inning single.  Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) (2-3) tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out two and walking one.

DeCarlo finished 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Devils.  Mangini and Jarin added their two-run homers, and Gabby Young had a pair of singles.  Linda Rizzo (6-5) earned the win after limiting the Rangers to four hits in five innings.  She recorded one strikeout.  Megan Zaccario gave up one hit and struck out one over the final two innings.

In game two, the Rangers got on the board right away, putting up a run in the top of the first.  After Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) led off with a double, Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J.) dropped down a bunt and the throw to first went into right field for an error.  Adams moved to third on the play, and she scored on Rodriguez's infield single.

However, FDU-Florham picked up an unearned tally in the bottom of the first, then added another in the second to go ahead.  The Devils threatened for more in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.  Drew put the tying run on base when Adams ripped a two-out single to right in the top of the seventh.  Villahermosa followed with a fly out, though, and FDU-Florham held on for the 2-1 victory.

Adams and Rodriguez both recorded a pair of hits in game two, with Rodriguez knocking in Adams for the Rangers' only run.  Ronchi and Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) each added a single.  Starting pitcher Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) (3-5) took the loss.  She allowed two unearned runs and seven hits while also issuing a walk over four innings before being relieved by Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.).  She yielded just one hit, struck out two and walked one over two shutout innings.

For the Devils, Courtney Rohde finished 2-for-3 and Mangini was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Annamarie Santangelo and Dani Sames, meanwhile, each scored a run for FDU-Florham.  Starting pitcher Kaleigh Oplinger went three innings, surrendering one run on three hits and striking out two.  Abbey Scarengelli (6-7) earned the win after tossing four shutout innings.  She gave up three hits.

Drew (1-9 Landmark) wraps up the 2018 campaign by hosting Susquehanna (24-10, 7-3 Landmark) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.  Between games of the twinbill, the Rangers will honor their four graduating seniors.
