Drew Turns Triple Play In Loss to Swarthmore

MADISON, N.J. – After battling the weather for most of the season, the Drew University baseball team began May with an absolutely picture-perfect 80-degree day for its matchup with Swarthmore on Tuesday afternoon.  The Rangers (16-19) flashed the defense, turning a triple play in the sixth inning, but the Garnet (29-9) ultimately came away with a 9-3 win at Doc Young Field.

Swarthmore had runners on first and second with nobody out in the top of the sixth when Matt Palmer sent a liner back to the mound.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) snagged the line drive, and, with the runners going on contact, threw to second for the out before the Rangers completed the triple play with the out at first.  That triple play prevented the Garnet from having an even bigger inning, as Jared Gillen had already belted a three-run homer in the frame to give Swarthmore a 6-2 lead.

The Garnet scored single runs in the second and third before the Rangers cut their deficit to 2-1 on Anthony Tagliaferro's (Monroe Township, N.J.) RBI single in the bottom of the third.  Drew tried to tie the game on the play, but Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) was thrown out at home.  After Swarthmore picked up another run in the fifth, Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to pull the Rangers within 3-2.

A pair of eighth-inning sacrifice flies increased Swarthmore's lead to 8-2 before Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) roped an RBI double to make it 8-3.  The Garnet then added an unearned tally in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Sabbag had three hits, including a pair of doubles, for the Rangers.  He also drove in a run.  Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.), meanwhile, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Tagliaferro was 2-for-4, as well, and he added an RBI.  Starting pitcher Mike Mancuso (East Haven, Conn.) (1-1) took the loss after yielding six runs on eight hits in five innings.  Five Drew relievers combined to hold the Garnet to three runs (two earned) and four hits over the final four innings.

For Swarthmore, Cole Elliott finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Coleson Hebble was 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Michael Sepe drove in two runs, and Gillen scored twice while also picking up three RBIs on his homer.  In addition to going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, Cole Beeker pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.  Starter Owen Webb lasted three innings and was charged with one run on five hits while striking out three and walking one.  Charles Groppe (5-0) earned the win after surrendering one run on two hits and recording two strikeouts in three innings.  Max Kassan gave up one hit in a scoreless inning of work.

On Wednesday, the Rangers continue their five-game homestand with a 4 p.m. matchup against DeSales (26-13).  It will be Drew's final non-conference contest of the season.
