Rangers Drop Opener of Elizabethtown Series

MADISON, N.J. – On Friday afternoon, the Drew University baseball team welcomed Elizabethtown to Doc Young Field for the opener of a season-ending three-game series.  In a contest that was moved up from Sunday due to the forecast of inclement weather, the Blue Jays (19-16, 11-5 Landmark) notched a 10-2 victory over the Rangers (16-21, 6-10 Landmark).

Elizabethtown scored single runs in the first and second innings before putting up a five-spot in the top of the fourth.  Anthony Tagliaferro (Monroe Township, N.J.) got the Rangers on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, but the Blue Jays made it 8-1 on Colby Smith's RBI single in the sixth.

After Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left field line, Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) drove him in with a single to center.  Nick Lorenz hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to increase Elizabethtown's advantage to 10-2, and Anthony Lippy retired the final seven Rangers he faced in a complete game victory.

Mateo and Felsenstein both had two hits for Drew, while Bryan Reagle (Easton, Pa.) was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  Eric DiPietro's (Devon, Pa.) pinch hit single in the sixth was Drew's only other hit in the contest.  Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) (3-6) suffered the loss in the final start of his career.  He allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and walked one in 3.2 innings.  Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) gave up one run on three hits while picking up a strikeout in 2.1 innings before Connor Henry (Budd Lake, N.J.), Brian Pascale (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) each tossed an inning of relief.

As a team, the Blue Jays tallied 16 hits—15 singles and the Lorenz home run.  Lorenz finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Smith was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.  Derek Manning, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Lippy (6-4) struck out eight and walked one while holding the Rangers to two runs (one earned) and six hits.

The Rangers and Blue Jays conclude the series with a pair of games on Saturday.  The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
