MADISON, N.J. - Senior
Sami Strathern scored with two minutes left to make it a one-goal game, but the Rangers' comeback ran out of time as Moravian College edged Drew 2-1 in a Landmark Conference (LC) field hockey tilt Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
Drew outshot the Greyhounds 17-11, including 8-0 in the fourth quarter. But Ashley Kunsman made 11 saves for Moravian, including five stops in the final period.
The Greyhounds (4-11, 1-4 LC) received both of its goals from Maddie Call, who scored early in the second quarter and midway through the third stanza.
Junior
Joie Slossar recordded six saves for the Rangers (2-13, 0-5 LC).
The Rangers took the only two shots in the first quarter, and it was a scoreless game after 15 minutes of play.
Moravian took the lead less than two minutes into the second period, when a shot from Call deflected off the keeper and into the cage. Drew would out-shoot the Greyhounds 5-4 in the period but were unable to find the cage and the visitors led 1-0 at the intermission.
Each side attempted three shots in the third quarter, when Call scored again with 6:24 on the clock. Collecting her own deflected shot off the goalie's pads, Call snuck a shot inside the right post to hand the Greyhounds their two-goal advantage.
The Rangers broke through on their final shot of the game. Sophomore
Carly Schiller began the play with a corner pass from the right side, sending it to classmate
April Serratelli at the right elbow. Serratelli threaded the needle to Strathern, who slapped it in from the left post for her second goal in as many games.
Freshman
Lauren Zultowski led the Rangers with five shots, including three that were on goal. Strathern and junior
Charlotte Grimm also placed three shots on frame.
The Greyhounds were able to run out the rest of the clock, though the Rangers gave the visitors a scare when Strathern drilled in a long restart as time expired. However, since it was taken beyond the circle and was not touched by another offensive player it did not count.
Drew continues its schedule on Tuesday, when it hosts Centenary University at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
