MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University field hockey team shut out Susquehanna University for three quarters, but the River Hawks struck early in the fourth quarter and handed the Rangers a 1-0 Landmark Conference (LC) setback on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
Junior goalieÂ
Joie Slossar made 12 saves for the Blue and Green, including four in each of the last three quarters.
Drew seniors
Madyson Griswold,
Casey Quinn, and
Sami Strathern were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the game.
Susquehanna (9-10, 5-2 LC), a Landmark Conference playoff qualifier, held a 7-0 shot advantage in the opening quarter before turning up the pressure in the second period with 10 shots and 13 penalty corners. However, the Ranger defense held strong and it was a scoreless game at the half.
The River Hawks attempted another seven shots in the third quarter before breaking through with the game's loan goal. Following a corner, Annalee Smith sent in a pass from the left elbow. It found a diving Hunter Pitman, who pushed the ball just past Slossar for her conference-leading 19th goal of the season.
The visitors posted seven additional shots, but Slossar and the Rangers stood tall and kept it a one-goal game.
Sophomore
Carly Schiller made a pair of defensive saves to finish with seven on the season to lead all Rangers (3-16, 0-7 LC).
