ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Drew University women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season Saturday evening and came up on the short end of a 75-53 decision in the One Love Seahawk Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's (Md.) College.
Freshman guard
Joey Meyers enjoyed a strong collegiate debut, leading all Rangers with 17 points, while junior center
Erin Frederick came up just shy of a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard
Julia Ramos added eight points and six assists.
Mary Washington used a 12-0 run midway through the first quarter to open up a 10-point lead, and the Eagles led 20-10 at the end of the period.
The Eagles pushed their lead to 17 early in the second quarter before Drew dug in defensively, allowing just two points over the final 5:25 seconds. The Rangers closed the second quarter on a 7-0 surge, with the final six points coming from Meyers, to cut a 13-point deficit down to six (32-26) at the half. But they were unable to get any closer in the second half, when the Eagles gradually pulled away.
The Rangers conclude tournament action on Sunday, when they take on St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
