Fast Start Vaults Women's Hoops Over NJCU

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team outscored New Jersey City 23-5 in the first quarter en route to a 90-40 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

Playing just their third home game of the season and their first since Nov. 16, the Rangers (6-2) never trailed after opening the game on a 14-0 run.

Sophomore forward Sekya Campbell led Drew with a game-high 16 points in 17 minutes of play, shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 at the foul line while grabbing five rebounds.

Seventeen Rangers entered the game, with 13 finding the scoring column. Junior guard Julia Ramos added 14 points and six assists while junior center Erin Frederick contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and three blocked shots. Sophomore guard Brooke Timinski chipped in with 11 points, shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, while senior guard Aly Axman posted eight rebounds.

Zyearah Taylor-Gason scored 10 points to lead the Gothic Knights (3-7).

The Rangers have now posted two of the top-six scoring performances in team history over their last three games. Drew's 90 points marked the program's sixth-highest total, and their 95-point outburst at Pratt Institute on Dec. 3 was the third-highest scoring output at Drew.

Four different Rangers scored during the team's big opening run. Campbell, Frederick, and Ramos all dropped in four points during the stretch, which was capped by a Ramos lay-up at the 6:11 mark.

Drew's shutout ended on a 3-pointer with 5:41 left in the opening quarter. But the Rangers would outscore NJCU 9-2 over the remainder of the period to open up their 18-point lead at the end of the quarter.

The hosts broke the game open with a 10-0 run midway through the quarter as their lead swelled to 25 (37-12) with 5:23 showing on the first-half clock. The Rangers carried a 45-20 lead into the locker room.

Drew continued to pull away in the second half and led 68-35 through three quarters. The Rangers settled any doubt in the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Knights 22-5 and allowed just one point over the final 5:24.

The Rangers shot 51.6% from the floor, tying their season-best. They forced 24 turnovers and tied a season-high with 16 steals.

Drew takes 12 days off before returning to action on Dec. 28, when they take on Clark in the first round of the Lehman Tournament.
