Women’s Lax Cruises By King’s in Season Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team opened its 2019 season on a high note, defeating King's College 19-7 in a non-conference match-up Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium. Sophomore Lauren Cassella poured in five goals and three assists for the Rangers while junior Allie DiDario also turned in a big performance with four goals, one assist, and 12 draw controls.

By the Numbers
Drew won its season opener for the second year in a row. The Monarchs fell to 1-1 on the season.
 
Highlights
• The Rangers led from start to finish, opening the game on a 4-1 run before blowing it open with an 8-1 run that made it 12-3 just before halftime. Cassella scored four of her goals in the opening half while DiDario found paydirt three times in the first 30 minutes.
• Drew settled any doubt with a 3-0 spurt to open the second half to push its advantage to 15-4. The hosts tacked on four more tallies over the final 14 minutes.
 
Top Performers
• DiDario's 12 draw controls tied her career-high and are just two shy of the school record.
• With eight points, Cassella came within one point of her career-best.
• Freshmen Kendall Hartt and Hailey Simmons enjoyed strong collegiate debuts. Hartt finished with three goals while Simmons totaled five ground balls, three caused turnovers, and one goal.
• Senior Mia Campanale and junior Jenna Morelli netted two goals apiece.
• Sophomore Kat Michalski was credited with five saves.
 
Stat Sheet
Drew finished with a 37-12 shot advantage and forced King's into 20 turnovers. The Rangers won 20 of 27 draws and were successful on 10 of 12 clears.
