Second-Half Run Keys Women’s Lacrosse

MADISON, N.J. – Trailing by three early in the second half, the Drew University women's lacrosse team reeled off a 6-0 run and the Rangers would hold on for an 18-15 non-conference victory over Vassar College Friday evening at Ranger Stadium. Four players combined for all of Drew's scoring, including sophomore Lauren Cassella and freshman Hailey Simmons, who scored five goals apiece.
 
By the Numbers
With the win Drew pushed its record to 3-0 for the first time since 2015. The Brewers were playing their season opener.                   
 
Highlights
• The Rangers led just once in the opening half after scoring the game's opening goal. However, the Blue and Green kept within striking distance and never trailed by more than two in the period. A goal from senior Mia Campanale made it 8-8, but Vassar scored the final two goals of the half.
• The Brewers struck in the opening minute of the second stanza to make it 11-8 before the Rangers embarked on their decisive run. Cassella and Simmons each cashed in twice during the stretch as Drew pushed its lead to 14-11 with just under 20 minutes left.
• Vassar nudged to within one (14-13) with 17:37 showing, but the Rangers responded with a pair of big goals from Campanale and Simmons to go back up by three with 11:51 remaining. The two sides traded goals twice the rest of the way, with Cassella setting the final score with 3:17 to go.
 
Top Performers
• Junior Allie DiDario turned in yet another tremendous all-around showing, scoring four goals while posting two assists, 10 draw controls, four caused turnovers, and three ground balls.
• In addition to her five goals, Cassella also dished out an assist.
• Campanale needed just five shots to score her four goals.
• Freshman Kendall Hartt contributed with six draw controls.
• Sophomore Kat Michalski made a season-high 10 saves.
 
Stat Sheet
The Brewers held a 33-29 shot advantage and a 30-15 surplus in ground balls. However, the Rangers won 20 of 35 draws.
 
Next Up
Drew goes on the road to play Lebanon Valley College in a non-conference tilt on Sunday at noon.
