Softball Swept by Middlebury in Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. - The softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Middlelbury College in its home opener on Sunday at a sunny and chilly Drew University Softball Complex. The Panthers won the opener 8-2 before claiming an 11-0, five-inning decision in the nightcap.

Highlights
• In the first game, the Panthers (4-0) went ahead 8-0 before freshman Madi Precht singled, stole a base, and scored on an error.
• The Rangers (4-10) scored again in the seventh when Precht led off with a double before scoring on a single from classmate MaKayla Sosa.
• Three different pitchers took the circle for Drew, including senior starter Cara O'Leary (3-1), who worked four innings. Freshman Skyler Colarusso blanked Middlebury on one hit over the last two innings.
• Precht finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored in the opener while sophomore Sophie Sirota was also 2-for-3.
• In the second game, Middlebury jumped on top 6-0 with three runs apiece in the first and third innings. After scoring once in the fourth, the Panthers added four in the fifth to bring the eight-run rule into effect.
• Drew had its best scoring opportunity in the third, when it loaded the bases with two outs, but was unable to capitalize.
• Sophomore Stephanie Burns threw all five innings for the Rangers, striking out two.
