Softball Drops a Pair at Catholic in Season Finale

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Drew University softball team closed out its 2019 season on Saturday with a pair of losses to a strong Catholic University squad in a Landmark Conference (LC) doubleheader. The Cardinals won the opener 8-0 in five innings before capturing the nightcap 11-5.

Three different Rangers collected three hits on the day, including sophomore Jasmine Vera, who reached base five times, going 2-for-3 with three walks. The Cardinals (20-18, 9-3 LC) finished in second place in the final conference standings.

In the first game, Drew (12-28, 1-11 LC) threatened in the first inning, but left the bases loaded. Catholic responded with two in the bottom of the frame to assume a 2-0 lead. The hosts went on to score three more runs in the third and one in the fourth to make it 6-0, then scored twice in the fifth to go ahead 8-0, ending the game with one out due to the eight-run rule.

Vera finished 2-for-2 with a walk in the opener while Burns went the distance in the circle.

Catholic rushed out to an 8-0 lead through the first four innings in the second game versus starting pitcher Cara O'Leary and reliever Megan Hulmes. The Rangers would not go quietly, however, scoring four in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half at 8-4. Freshman Paxtan Perry drilled a two-run single in the inning while sophomore Adriana Rodriguez smacked an RBI-double.

The Cardinals came back with three insurance runs over the fifth sixth. Drew scored its final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Vera.

The Rangers were held to four hits in the second game but drew eight walks, including two apiece from Vera, freshman Madi Precht, and sophomore Sophie Sirota.
