Elizabethtown Tops Baseball in Series Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College scored all eight of its runs over the first five innings and handed the Drew University baseball team an 8-3 loss in the opener of a three-game Landmark Conference series Wednesday afternoon.
 
By The Numbers
Drew is now 19-16, 7-9 in Landmark Conference play and with just two conference games left, trails the University of Scranton by one game for the fourth and final conference playoff berth. Elizabethtown improved to 13-25 and 6-10 in conference play.
 
Highlights
• The Blue Jays scored the first eight runs of the game, plating one in the first inning versus senior starting pitcher Jendy Castillo before adding two in the third.
• E-town added three more runs in the fourth and two in the fifth versus Castillo and senior reliever Joshua Williams to assume their 8-0 lead.
• The Rangers finally reached Blue Jay starter Joseph Sarich in the sixth, when junior Jon Cocchio singled home classmate Anthony Tagliaferro, who doubled earlier in the inning.
• The Blue and Green scored their final two runs in the seventh against reliever Justin Cherry, when junior Matthew Lange blasted a two-run homer to right.
 
 Top Performers
• Lange's homer was his fifth long ball of the season, mark that ranks second among the Rangers.
• Senior Zach Lipshitz singled and has now reached base safely in 23 straight games.
• Senior Davis Fouts came in to fire 3 2/3 of scoreless ball to close the game.
 
Next Up
The Rangers and Blue Jays are scheduled to wrap up their series on Saturday back at Elizabethtown starting at 12:30 p.m.
