Grimm's OT Game-Winner Vaults Rangers in Season Opener

MADISON, N.J. - Junior Charlotte Grimm scored the game-winning goal on a diving tip-in early in overtime, lifting the Drew University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Sage Colleges Friday evening in the team's home and season opener on the first day of the Drew Fall Festival.

Grimm's game-winner gave her team its only lead of the game, as the Rangers twice erased a one-goal deficit.

The victory marked Drew's first season-opening win since a 13-2 triumph over Cedar Crest in 2015.

The game was played in four 15-minute quarters - a new rule adopted by the NCAA this past season.

After the Gators scored late in the opening quarter, the Rangers answered when sophomore Carly Schiller scored on a penalty stroke midway through the second quarter and it was a 1-1 game at the half.

Sage went back in front late in the third quarter and carried its lead into the last 10 minutes of regulation. But that's when freshman Lauren Zultowski scored her first career goal off a dish from sophomore Amber Frikkee to make it a 2-2 affair with 8:15 left.

The Gators had a goal disallowed in overtime and the Rangers capitalized. Zultowski set up the scoring play, as her blast from the top of the arc was knocked down by Sage keeper Abigayle Greier. Sophomore Jules DeGenova then backhanded a nifty pass through the legs of a defender toward the right post, where Grimm swooped in for her second career goal and her first game-winner.

A pair of goalies split the action in goal for Drew. Junior Joie Slossar played the first and third quarters and finished with two saves while freshman Bridget Kenny came on for the second and fourth quarters as well as the overtime period, turning aside three shots.

The Rangers conclude Festival play on Saturday, when they take on face Ithaca College at 7:30 p.m.
