FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Senior
Max Felsenstein went 5-for-6 with four RBIs, three runs, two doubles, and two stolen bases as the Drew University baseball team broke open a close game with an eight-run sixth inning en route to a 15-4 seven-inning victory over Northland during its Spring Break trip to Florida Thursday afternoon.
The Rangers (4-4) banged out a season-high 23 hits, a mark that is tied for fifth-most in team history and the most since they also had 23 in a 14-1 win over Elizabethtown on April 18, 2015.
Felsenstein posted a career-high for both hits and RBIs and reached base in all six of his plate appearances. He batted safely in his last four at-bats and ripped his last two hits in the same inning.
Freshman
Jake Welsh finished 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs for Drew while senior
Jon Cocchio went 3-for-4 with three runs. Junior
Cole Bosch also drilled three hits while freshman
Matthew Kroll notched three RBIs.
The Jacks (1-7) led 1-0 after the first inning before the Rangers took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second. Northland answered with a run in the bottom of the frame before Felsenstein drilled a two-run single in the third to put Drew up 4-2.
It was still a close game after five innings of play. The Rangers scored three in the top of the inning that included run-scoring singles from Kroll and senior
Brent Lincoln and an RBI-double from Welsh. But the Jacks scored twice in the bottom half to make it 7-4.
Drew broke it open in the sixth, when it exploded for 10 hits. Bosch led off with a triple before scoring on a single from sophomore
Ryan Nagle. Kroll brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before Welsh drilled an RBI-single. Cocchio smacked a two-run single to make it a 12-4 before Nagle recorded his second run-scoring single in the inning. After singling earlier in the frame, Felsenstein set the final score with a two-run double.
On the mound, sophomore
Teddy Hoxie got the start and came away with a no-decision, tossing 4 1/3 innings. Senior
Brandon Radd (1-0) worked the final 2 2/3 and did not allow a run or a hit while striking out two to pick up the win.
Drew plays its next-to-last game of the trip on Friday, when it faces Muskingum at 1 p.m.
