Women's Hoops Breaks Team Wins Record With ECAC Victory

RADNOR, Pa. - The Drew University women's basketball team broke the program record for victories, using a big fourth quarter to defeat Misericordia University 74-65 in the ECAC quarterfinals Friday evening at Cabrini University.

The victory pushed the Rangers to 17-9 on the season, giving them one more victory than the 2003-04 team posted when it set the former record with a 16-10 mark.

Drew moves on the ECAC semifinals, where it will take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore guard Sekya Campbell led the Rangers with a career-high 20 points on perfect 8-for-8 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five steals. Junior guard Julia Ramos contributed 17 points while freshman guard Joey Meyers notched 11 points and eight rebounds. Junior center Erin Frederick also scored 11 points and swiped five steals while sophomore forward Cecelia Kracht posted eight points and four blocked shots.

Jordan Barth posted 19 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (20-7).

Misericordia jumped to a 21-15 lead after the first quarter, but the Rangers rallied with a big second period, outscoring the Cougars 19-9 to assume a 34-30 halftime advantage.

It was a tie game (46-46) at the end of the third quarter after Misericordia outscored the Rangers 16-12. But the Blue and Green were on fire in the final stanza, when they shot 11-for-15 from the field while outscoring the Cougars 28-19.

The Rangers never trailed in the fourth quarter after Campbell scored seven seconds into the period. After Misericordia answered with a bucket to tie it at 48-all, Campbell gave Drew the lead for good when she scored with 8:54 remaining. Ramos added a conventional 3-point play before Frederick split a pair of free throws to put the Rangers up six (54-48) with 7:03 left.

Drew led 64-57 with 2:31 to go before scoring six straight points in a crucial stretch. Campbell and Ramos posted back-to-back lay-ins, with Meyers setting up Ramos' bucket with a steal and assist. Meyers capped the run with she scored a lay-up of her own with 1:11 left, handing the Rangers a commanding 13-point lead.

Drew came up with 16 steals for the night and scored 30 points off turnovers.

The Rangers and RPI will be meeting for just the second time in program history. The Engineers won the inaugural meeting 60-41 on Dec. 30, 2015.
