Rangers Rally, But Fall to Stevens in Season Finale

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit, but Stevens pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Rangers an 84-79 setback in a non-conference tilt and Drew's season finale Thursday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Senior guard Julia Ramos enjoyed a strong performance on Senior Night, scoring a season-high 24 points while dishing out four assists. She ends an outstanding career as the program's 10th all-time leading scorer with 1,107 points while also finishing third in assists (395) and fifth in steals (228).

Junior guard Sekya Campbell and sophomore guard Joey Meyers each posted double-doubles of 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Rangers (4-5) while senior forward Erin Frederick contributed 12 points.

Emily Nunez scored 30 points and made 9-of-14 3-pointers for Stevens (2-1).

The Ducks never trailed and led by as much as 13 in the first quarter behind an incredible performance from Nunez, who scored 24 points and drained 7-of-9 3-pointers in the opening quarter alone. Sophomore guard Kyra Mann converted a lay-up that trimmed the deficit to 35-25 at the end of the quarter.

Stevens extended its lead to as much 16 early in the second quarter before the Rangers began to chip away. They pulled to within single digits (50-42) with 2:46 to go after a transition lay-up from Campbell before scoring the final six points of the half. Ramos connected on a 3-pointer before Meyers converted an and-1 on a fastbreak with five seconds left, pulling the Rangers to within four (52-48) at the break.

Drew continued to rally in the second half and came all the way back to tie the game on a Meyers bucket with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter. But the Ducks scored the last five points of the period and led 65-60 heading into the final stanza.

The Rangers pulled to within three on three occasions early in the fourth quarter, the last time coming on a pair of Campbell free throws that made it 69-66 with 6:15 left. But that's when Stevens used a 7-0 spurt to open up a 10-point lead.

Frederick stopped the run with a lay-up before Ramos connected on a pair of free throws to make it a six-point affair (76-70) with 3:08 to go. A Campbell put-back again cut it to six, but Nunez answered with her final triple of the night with 1:44 left, making it 81-72. Stevens led by at least seven the rest of the way until Ramos knocked down a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to set the final score.
