WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Drew University softball team played its first games since March 10 of last season when it traveled to Catholic University for a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Cardinals swept the twinbill, winning 4-1 and 7-2.
Sophomore
Julia VanLiew and junior
Madi Precht led the Rangers at the plate for the day, collecting three hits apiece, while sophomore
Bailey Comeau threw a complete game in the opener.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Drew was playing for the first time since it hosted Stevens on March 10, 2020. The Rangers were competing in their first Landmark Conference games since they visited Catholic on April 27, 2019.
In the first game, Catholic struck first with two runs in the first. The Rangers cut the lead in half when VanLiew doubled in a run in the fifth, scoring junior transfer
Ciara Lyons. The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the inning, however, with a pair of insurance runs.
Freshman
Madi Baldwin went 2-for-3 in her collegiate debut for Drew while Precht finished 2-for-4. Comeau worked all six innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out two.
Catholic jumped on top early again in the nightcap, putting up a four-spot in the first. The Rangers climbed back into it with a two-run third, however, when VanLiew singled in a run and Precht scored on a double steal to make it 4-2.
The Cardinals were quick to answer again, this time scoring what would turn out to be the final three runs of the game.
VanLiew and senior
Sophie Sirota collected two hits apiece for Drew in the second game. Junior
Emilee Marshall started in the circle and pitched four innings before giving way to sophomore Briana Seals, who tossed two scoreless innings.
The same two teams meet again on Sunday in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Drew Softball Complex.
