MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University softball team earned a walk-off victory in both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference (LC) action Saturday afternoon at the Drew Softball Complex.
The Rangers (2-4, 2-4 LC) won the opener 2-1 on a single from senior
Jasmine Vera, then rallied to capture the nightcap 5-4 on a pinch-hit single from freshman
Madi Baldwin.
Sophomore
Bailey Comeau pitched all 16 innings for the Rangers, firing a two-hitter in the opener before working an eight-hitter in the second game.
In the first game, the Blue Jays (0-6, 0-6 LC) pushed across an unearned run in the top of the first inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error before eventually scoring on a single. But Comeau (2-2) was nearly perfect the rest of the way, retiring 22 of the final 23 batters she faced, including her final 17. She finished with six strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
In the meantime, the Rangers tied it in the third, when Vera singled with two outs before eventually scoring on a single from junior
Renata Primmer.
After Blue Jay starter Paige Phillips tossed three perfect innings from the fourth through the sixth, Drew rallied in the seventh but left the tying run on third. But after Comeau worked a 1-2-3 eighth, the Rangers quickly put the game away in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Madi Precht ripped a triple down the third base line before Vera smacked a single up the middle to give Drew its first win of the year.
In the nightcap, the Rangers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, which was capped by a two-run single from sophomore
Gianna Palmieri.
E-town pulled to within a run with a two-run fourth, then tied it in in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. After the Rangers left the game-winning run on third in the seventh, the Blue Jays pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth on an error and single to go up 4-3.
Vera started Drew's rally in the bottom of the inning with a two-out walk. She stole second before scoring on a single from junior
Ciarra Lyons, who ended up on third after the throw from the outfield made its way into foul territory. Baldwin then ended it with a single up the middle to give the Rangers the sweep - their first in Landmark Conference play since April 2, 2011 versus Juniata.
Primmer went 3-for-4 in the second game to finish 5-for-7 on the day. Sophomore
Julia VanLiew collected a pair of hits in the nightcap while Comeau struck out four and walked two.
Sunday's doubleheader between the same two teams at Elizabethtown was postponed due to impending rain and has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m.
