MADISON, N.J. - Susquehanna University used a big second-half run to hand the Drew University women's lacrosse team a 12-7 setback in the quarterfinals of the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday at Ranger Stadium.
The fifth-seeded River Hawks (4-4) broke a 5-5 tie early in the second half with a 6-0 run over a 15-minute span.
Junior
Hailey Simmons and freshman
Emma DiPatri led the Rangers (3-4) offensively with two goals apiece while senior
Lauren Cassella posted one goal, one assist, and five draw controls. Graduate student
Allie DiDario registered three caused turnovers and four ground balls and closed out her career with school records of 170 caused turnovers and 348 draw controls. Senior
Katiana Michalski made 14 saves in goal for the Rangers.
Caroline Chase notched three goals and five assists to lead Susquehanna, which will now face top-seeded Catholic University in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Prior to the game, Drew's five seniors - Cassella, DiDario, Michalski,
Sophia Aburmeileh, and
Charly Nolting - were honored in a brief ceremony.
The River Hawks never trailed after opening the game on a 3-0 run. Drew came back to tie it after a 3-0 spurt of their own, which included both of Simmons' goals and the first career tally for DiPatri. Simmons scored the last goal of the half with 6:18 on the clock and it was a 3-3 game heading into the intermission.
Susquehanna connected on the first two tallies in the second half but the Rangers answered again on goals from Nolting and freshman
Lizzy Barrett to make it a 5-5 contest with 24:18 remaining, but that's when the River Hawks used their big rally to break it open.
