All-Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Team
TOWSON, Md. - Two days after capturing the Landmark Conference title, five members of the Drew University men's tennis team have been selected to the All-Landmark Team.
In addition,
Scott Veith has been honored as the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
The Rangers combined to collect a total of six all-conference accolades. Graduate student
Geoffrey Diehl was named First-Team All-Landmark in both singles and doubles, and he was joined by his doubles partner, junior
Bret Schuler, on the first team. In addition, junior
Dan Blumenthal earned second-team recognition in singles while sophomore
John Dickey and senior
Bryce Kennedy were second-team honorees in doubles.
Drew's five all-conference selections ties the 2011-12 team for the second-most in team history.
Veith has guided the Rangers to a perfect 10-0 record, and he steered the Blue and Green to their first Landmark Conference title since 2013. His team remained unbeaten despite the absence of numerous international team members this semester as well as several other key players who missed significant action. Veith becomes Drew's second Landmark Men's Tennis Coach of the Year, as Jeff Brandes earned the award in 2008, 2011, and 2012. It is also the second career Coach of the Year award for Veith, who was also honored by the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Conference as the men's head coach at FDU-Florham in 2004.
Diehl finishes his career with six All-Landmark Conference awards - two in singles and four in doubles. He was also named to the First Team in doubles in both 2017-18 and 2018-19, and he was a second-team selection in both singles and doubles in 2016-17, when he was also named the Landmark Conference Co-Rookie of the Year.
Making the most of his final season as a Ranger, Diehl has put together a 7-2 record at No. 1 singles and has won his last five matches. His biggest victory and perhaps the moment of his career came this past Saturday, when he defeated 2021 Landmark Player of the Year Tarquinn McGurrin at No. 1 singles to clinch Drew's 5-2 victory over the University of Scranton in the Landmark championship match. Diehl finished a combined 5-0 in singles and doubles over three playoff matches to earn the Landmark Tournament MVP award.
Diehl has teamed up with Schuler to post an unblemished 10-0 record at No. 2 doubles this year, helping Schuler capture his first All-Landmark Conference award. Schuler is now 24-11 for his career in doubles play.
For his career, Diehl has racked up a 42-20 singles record and a 70-18 doubles mark, including a perfect 30-0 ledger at No. 2 doubles. He holds the school and Landmark Conference record for career doubles victories, and his 112 combined victories rank third in school history.
Blumenthal came away with his second career All-Landmark honor, as he captured the same award as a freshman. Competing at No. 2 singles, he has posted a 4-5 mark on the season. Blumenthal has also gone 7-1 in doubles play, including 6-0 at No. 3.
Dickey and Kennedy were each named All-Landmark for the first time in their careers after going 4-4 on the season at No. 1 doubles. Kennedy is also 4-4 overall in doubles this year while Dickey has gone 5-5. For his career, Kennedy has posted a 32-26 doubles record while Dickey has logged a 12-9 mark.
The Rangers will learn the date, opponent, and start time of their NCAA Championship match when the field is released on Monday at NCAA.com.
