Softball Season Comes to a Close at Landmark Championships

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Drew University softball team saw its 2021 season come to a close with a pair of losses at the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday at the University of Scranton.

The fifth-seeded Rangers lost 14-0 in five innings to third-seeded Catholic University before they were edged 2-1 by second-seeded Scranton.

Versus Catholic, the Cardinals jumped to a 6-0 lead through the first two innings, then broke it open with a seven-run seventh.

Junior MaKayla Sosa posted Drew's first base hit when she bunted her way on in the third versus Catholic starter Katie Hurd. It would be the only hit Hurd would allow over four innings. Junior Paxtan Perry added a single in the fifth versus reliever Allie Lajeuness.

Sophomore Bailey Comeau started on the mound for the Rangers and pitched two innings before junior Emilee Marshall tossed the last two frames.

Drew struck first versus Scranton. In the top of the second, senior Jasmine Vera drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, she scored from first on a double to left-center from junior Ciara Lyons.

The Royals tied it in the bottom of the inning, however, before scoring what held up as the game-winning run on a solo homer from Jessica Stadler in the third.

The Rangers had numerous opportunities to pull even, putting runners in scoring position in every inning from the fourth through the sixth but could not dent starting pitcher Meaghan Dowdell.

Junior Madi Precht helped keep Drew within striking distance, making a pair of diving catches in centerfield.

Comeau also started in the circle versus Scranton and tossed a five-hit, six-inning complete game. She blanked the Royals over the last three innings, retiring the last seven batters she faced. Comeau struck out one and walked only two.

Dowdell also pitched a five-hit complete game for Scranton.

Along with Lyons, Perry and Sosa also doubled for the Rangers.
