MADISON, N.J. - Junior
Teddy Hoxie was four outs from a no-hitter, but Susquehanna University rallied with three runs in the sixth inning for a 3-2 Landmark Conference victory on the final day of the regular season on Sunday at Doc Young Field.
The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and the River Hawks leading 13-2.
The Rangers struck early in the opener, as senior
Cole Bosch led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single from sophomore
Jake Welsh versus Susquehanna starter Aidan Martin.
Drew pushed its lead to 2-0 in the third when sophomore
Matthew Kroll drilled a solo homer to left - his second long ball in as many games. But two batters later, Brice Gregory was summoned out of the bullpen, and we went on to toss 4 1/3 shutout innings.
Hoxie was in command from the start, retiring the first 10 batters he faced while striking out four along the way. He lost his perfect game when Craig Roumes was hit with a pitch, but Hoxie got the last two outs in the fourth.
Susquehanna drew a two-out walk in the fifth, but Hoxie kept the no-no going when he struck out a batter looking for his fifth and final K of the game. He got the first out in the sixth before running into trouble, as Susquehanna's Nos. 1-2 hitters each reached on an error to put runners on first and second.
Junior
Ryan Nagle made a spectacular diving catch in rightfield for the second out of the inning, but that's when cleanup hitter Adam Schreck singled to center for Susquehanna's first hit while driving in a run to make it 2-1. One batter later Steve Lorenz blasted a two-run double into deep center for what held up as the game-winning hit.
Senior
Kyle Tamburri was then called in out of the bullpen to get the final out of the inning. He also blanked Susquehanna in the seventh, striking out two.
The Rangers threatened in the bottom of the inning, when freshman
Jack Gannon singled before Nagle reached on an error with one out. But Gregory retired the final two batters he faced.
Kroll and sophomore
K.J. Hallgren finished with two hits apiece for the Rangers.Â
In the second game, Welsh and freshman
Lewie Weaver led Drew at the plate, with each going 2-for-2. However, statistics do not count in incomplete games.
The games served as a preview for Tuesday's Landmark Conference play-in game, which will be held at Susquehanna at a time to be announced.
