MADISON, N.J. - Senior center
Erin Frederick scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting and the Drew University women's basketball team picked up a big 78-51 Landmark Conference (LC) victory over Moravian University Monday evening in Baldwin Gym.
With the win, the Rangers (13-4, 4-4 LC) moved into a tie with Moravian for fourth place in the conference standings.
Frederick also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots, as she moved into 10th in team history in rebounds and third (tied) in blocks.
Junior guard
Joey Meyers contributed 17 points, shooting 10-for-12 at the foul line, while posting four assists and three steals for Drew, which started to pull away with a 14-2 run to end the first half. Senior guard
Micela Genua capped the spurt with a halfcourt buzzer-beater that gave the Rangers a 34-23 lead.
Senior guard
Sekya Campbell contributed a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Rangers while junior guard
Gwen Alberici dished out a career-high eight assists.
Kayla Yoegel paced the Greyhounds (6-13, 4-4 LC) with 13 points.
Drew led for nearly the entire game, though it was a close affair in the first quarter, when neither side led by more than six. The Rangers assumed a 16-15 edge at the end of the period.
The Greyhounds led 21-20 with 5:43 left in the opening half before the Rangers embarked on their run to end the stanza. Meyers put the Rangers in front for good when she started the run with a pair of free throws, and she followed up with a 3-pointer in transition. After a Frederick bucket, Meyers hit two more from the line as Drew led 29-23 with 1:43 on the clock.
Meyers continued her stellar play when she deflected a pass near midcourt and saved it from going out of bounds while diving into the scorers table. In the same motion, she flipped the ball right to a breaking Genua, who drove it to the rack for a lay-up.
Genua then closed the quarter with her big shot. Taking an inbounds pass with 2.6 seconds on the clock, she took two dribbles and let a shot fly from beyond the timeline, hitting nothing but net.
Drew continued its run in the second half, outscoring Moravian 13-4 to open up a 20-point lead (47-27) with 3:58 left in the third quarter. Frederick helped power the surge with six points.
After the 'Hounds narrowed the deficit down to 15, the Rangers erupted with a 11-2 run to close the quarter. After Frederick scored six straight points, Meyers hit a pair of free throws before senior guard
Brooke Timinski splashed in a 3-pointer with five seconds left to make it a 58-34 game heading into the final period.
Drew was never threatened in the final quarter, when Moravian was unable to draw closer than 25. The Rangers led by as much as 31 midway through the quarter.
For the night, Drew shot 88.0% (22-25) at the foul line while holding the Greyhounds to 28.6% shooting.
The Rangers continue their three-game week and their four-game homestand when they take on Susquehanna University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference match-up.
