UNION, N.J. -Â The Drew University baseball got off to an early 2-0 lead, but couldn't follow up an explosive first inning in a 10-2 non-conference loss to Alvernia University Saturday afternoon at Kean University.
Junior
K.J. Hallgren gave Drew the lead with two outs in the top of the first, when he drilled a 1-2 pitch down the right field line and legged out an inside-the-park home run. It was the first homer of Hallgren's career.
The Rangers tacked on another run in the first with some heads up base running by freshman catcher
Mike Gallaro, who scored from third after a failed pick off attempt by Alvernia pitcher Nick Calicari sailed past first base.
On the mound, senior
Teddy Hoxie had an electric season debut. He struck out seven and allowed only two earned runs on three hits over six impressive innings. He showed great composure after allowing a couple early runs, successfully getting out of several tight situations. In the sixth, he worked around a one-out walk and a wild pitch by striking out his final batter of the day looking to keep the Rangers in the game.
Alvernia eventually broke the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh by putting up a seven spot. Mike Ramundo headlined the Golden Wolves' rally with a bases-clearing triple.
The Rangers will look to earn their first win next Saturday when they take on Saint Elizabeth University and FDU-Florham in a doubleheader at FDU.
