COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Drew University women's lacrosse team scored the final three goals of the game and held off an Ursinus College comeback, defeating the Bears 16-13 on the road Saturday afternoon in a non-conference showdown.
The Rangers (6-0) ran their winning streak to six and have now scored at least 16 goals in every game this season.
Sophomore
Ella Champigny led Drew with four goals and one assist, and she also came up with several clutch plays late in the game. She forced a turnover that led to the game-tying goal that she scored, then picked up a draw control that set up the game-winning goal. Senior
Meliha Emini added three goals - including the game-winner - to go with one assist and four ground balls while sophomore
Emma DiPatri also scored three goals. Sophomore
Lizzy Barrett contributed a pair of goals while seniors
Jenna Draney and
Hailey Simmons notched one goal and two assists each.
Defensively, junior
Anna Horne collected a career-high 16 saves, none bigger than her stop on a potential game-tying shot with under two minutes left. Sophomore
Catherine DiPatri scooped five ground balls while senior
Kendall Hartt chased down five draw controls.
Grace Lynch posted three goals and five assists to lead Ursinus (3-3).
After the Rangers led by as much as five in the first half, the Bears gradually chipped away and eventually took the lead (14-13) with 4:30 left, capping a 4-0 run. But just over a minute later, Champigny caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, then scored a free-position goal to knot the score. She then won the ensuing draw to give the Rangers possession.
The Rangers went on to run nearly a minute off the clock before Emini scored what held up as the game-winning goal with 2:32 left, finishing off a feed from Draney. Ursinus won the draw, but with 1:32 to go Horne made her big save. Barrett provided the finishing touches when she scored with eight ticks showing.
Drew outscored the Bears 5-2 in the first quarter and continued to pull away in the second quarter, opening up a 7-2 lead with 11:41 on the first-half clock. Ursinus climbed back into it, however, using a 6-2 run to make it a one-goal game. The Rangers led 10-8 at the intermission.
The Rangers nudged their lead to 13-10 with 5:16 left in the third quarter before the Bears embarked on their comeback, setting up the dramatic finish.
Drew is back in action on Tuesday, when it visits Stevens at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
