MADISON, N.J. - In an offensive showcase that featured a total of 20 runs, 23 hits and 15 walks, the Drew University baseball team came out on top and defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent 11-9 in Tuesday's non-conference game at Doc Young Field.
Senior
Cole Bosch drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double as part of a five-run seventh for the Rangers. Bosch finished the day 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs.
Drew opened up the scoring with a five-run rally in the bottom of the first. Remarkably, they managed to score all five runs without recording a single hit. Drew's first six baserunners of the day - Bosch,
Anthony Diaz,
Shane Benson,
Ryan Jones,
Matt Myers, and
Dallas Lorenzetti - all got a free pass on a walk or hit batsman, forcing in three runs in the process. Then with two outs, freshman
JD Daniels bounced one at the third baseman, who misplayed the ball to allow the final two runs of the inning to score.
The Rangers would add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth when, with two outs, Bosch put himself into scoring position by ripping a double down the right field line. He would be driven in by Diaz, who blooped one to right after falling behind 1-2 in the count.
The Dolphins, however, weren't out of the game yet. Trailing 6-2 in the top of the seventh, they came back and took the lead after plating six runs to make it an 8-6 ballgame.
Fortunately for Drew, this lead change wouldn't last long as the Rangers answered with five more runs in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Myers kicked things off with a sac fly to left for his second RBI of the day. Later, with two outs, Bosch would again double to right field with what held up as the game-winning hit. And just like before, Diaz would follow up Bosch with an RBI-single to bring in two more runs and give Drew an 11-8 lead.
Overall, Bosch and Diaz would combine to go 4-for-7 on the day with three walks, five RBIs and four runs scored.
On the mound, junior
Giovanni DeGiglio made his third start of the season and went four innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. Freshmen
Tom Wilkie and
Jake Bilheimer would each pitch an inning in relief before junior
Nick Pellegrino came in to close out the final three innings of the game and earn his first win as a Ranger. Pellegrino worked three innings, allowing just one run on four hits and no walks while striking out four. All four pitchers combined to fan 11 batters.
The Rangers have a quick turnaround as they return to the field on Thursday at 3 p.m. for non-conference matchup at Centenary University.
