MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University softball team took an early lead in both ends of its Landmark Conference (LC) doubleheader versus Moravian University, but the Greyhounds used a big inning late in both games to come away with a sweep on Friday at the Drew Softball Complex.
Moravian (20-2, 6-0 LC) won the opener 4-2 before capturing the nightcap 6-1.
Drew's six seniors were recognized in a ceremony between games.
The twinbill was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday but was moved up one day due to a rainy forecast.
In the first game, senior
Emilee Marshall got the call in the circle for the Rangers (18-11, 3-5 LC) and left after facing one batter. Junior
Bailey Comeau came on with a runner on second and escaped from the inning without allowing a run. She would go on to throw two more scoreless innings.
Meanwhile, Drew got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Senior
Madi Precht led off with a perfect bunt down the third base line, was grounded to second, then scored on a two-out single up the middle by freshman
Teagan Bradley.
The Greyhounds broke through in the fourth, plating three runs on two hits with the last two scoring on groundouts.
Moravian pushed across another run in the fifth before the Rangers scored one run in the bottom half. Precht led off with a double down the leftfield line before eventually scoring from third on a groundout to third to make it 4-2.
Comeau would retire seven of the final eight batters she faced while tossing a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, capped by back-to-back strikeouts to end the seventh. But Moravian starter Madi Cunningham was also effective late, setting down seven of her last eight batters as well.
Precht led the Rangers in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Comeau scattered six hits, walked only two, and struck out seven.
Cunningham also tossed a six-hitter for Moravian while Emily Silberman went 3-for-3 at the plate.
In the nightcap, Bradley started in the circle for Drew and was outstanding early on. She retired the first eight batters she faced and 11 of her first 12 before finally allowing a hit with two outs in the fourth. But following the single, she got a strikeout to keep her team ahead 1-0.
Drew scored the first run of the game in the third inning, when junior
Molly O'Brien doubled to right, then scored when senior
Renata Primmer flied out and an outfielder threw the ball away at third, allowing O'Brien to trot home.
Moravian broke through with a six-run fifth. After scoring a run on a sacrifice fly, the Greyhounds used a pair of home runs to break it open. Lindsey Gawrys drilled a three-run homer to make it 4-1 before Silberman capped the big inning with a two-run shot, setting the final score.
O'Brien finished 2-for-3 for the Rangers while Bradley went the distance for Drew, striking out four. Madison Hummel worked a three-hitter for the Greyhounds.
Drew continues its season on Tuesday, when it visits Delaware Valley in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
