HUNTINGDON, Pa. -Â Fighting to keep its playoff hopes alive, the Drew University softball team split its Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata College with a 12-2 victory in game one followed by a 5-3 loss in game two on Saturday afternoon. Game one ended after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Now at 4-6 in the Landmark Conference and 22-13 overall, the Rangers remain one game behind Catholic University (5-5) for the final playoff spot. As for the Eagles, with their win in game two they earned their first conference victory of the season (1-7).
Game one was all Drew as the Rangers racked up 16 hits while only allowing five. The top of the order was as potent as ever with senior
Madi Precht, senior
Renata Primmer, and junior
Molly O'Brien each going 3-for-4 with a combined four RBIs and six runs scored. In addition, with her second stolen base of the day, O'Brien broke the single-season school record for steals. She now has 19 on the season, one more than Jennifer Mateo stole in 2012 and Colleen Mahon swiped in 2003.
Precht legged out two bunt singles on the day, with her second plating senior
Ciara Lyons,
who scored all the way from first base thanks to a wide throw from the first baseman. Primmer and O'Brien had a highlight moment of their own as Primmer opened up the top of the third with a triple off the left field wall and came around to score on the very next pitch as O'Brien knocked a double to right-center.
Drew's biggest inning of the day came in the top of the fifth as six Rangers came around to score. SeniorÂ
Paxtan Perry drove in the first run with a single to center before sophomore
Madi Baldwin brought home
another with a pinch-hit double to left. After Lyons notched her first RBI of the game on a groundout, Baldwin proceeded to score on a passed ball. Primmer and freshman
Teagan Bradley then capped off the rally with back-to-back RBI singles to center to make it a 12-2 game.
In the circle, junior
Bailey Comeau pitched a two-hit complete game, allowing two runs and striking out six.
Bradley would get the start in game two and also went the distance, pitching six innings while striking out four.
The Rangers got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third after freshman
Francesca O'Kleasky knocked an RBI-double over the head of the right fielder and was subsequently driven in on a bloop single from Bradley that just barely cleared the infield.
Unfortunately, the Rangers were undone by a four-run fourth inning by the Eagles. Drew inched closer to regaining the lead in the fifth after Primmer singled down the left field line to drive in O'Brien, but in the end it wasn't enough.
The Rangers will have a quick turnover as they head to Selinsgrove, Pa. on Sunday for a decisive Landmark Conference doubleheader with Susquehanna University starting at 1 p.m.
