Women's Lax Earns Senior Day Win, Clinches Landmark Playoff Berth

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's lacrosse team celebrated its seven seniors before the game, then punched its ticket into the Landmark Conference Championships with a 20-14 victory over Susquehanna University in a sunny Ranger Stadium Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Rangers (11-5, 4-3 LC) clinched the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Landmark tournament. They will visit top-seeded and 18th-ranked Catholic University in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Offensively, sophomore Lizzy Barrett and senior Hailey Simmons combined for 11 goals, with each tying their career-high as the Rangers posted their second-straight 20-goal game. Barrett poured in six goals and three assists while Simmons found the back of the net five times. Classmates Meliha Emini and Jenna Draney scored four goals apiece, with Emini also contributing two assists, a career-high nine draw controls, and three ground balls. Sophomore Ella Champigny contributed with three assists and four ground balls.

Senior Kendall Hartt also turned in a big performance while reaching a career milestone. With her fifth and final draw control of the day, she became just the third player in team history to reach 200 for her career. Hartt also netted one goal and one assist.

Senior Kennedy Youtz scooped a career-high five ground balls to help lead the defense while junior Anna Horne collected 14 saves.

Caroline Chase led the River Hawks (9-8, 2-5 LC) with six goals and five assists while Kelsey Homberg scored five goals.

Susquehanna scored the first two goals over the opening 1:40, but the Rangers responded with an 8-0 run to take control of the game. Barrett led the surge with four of her goals while Draney and Simmons scored two apiece and Drew led 8-2 with 3:44 still remaining in the opening quarter. The River Hawks scored with 1:38 on the clock to make it an 8-3 game at the end of the first period.

The Rangers led by six on three more occasions, the last coming when Emini scored for the second time in less than two minutes to make it an 11-5 game with 7:58 left in the opening half. However, Susquehanna climbed back into it with a 4-0 run spanning the second and third quarters. They scored the last three goals of the first half to pull with 11-8, then struck for the first goal of the third quarter to trim the deficit to two.

Drew would answer with a rally of its own, however, reeling off a decisive 5-0 run to go up 16-9 with 5:12 left in the third quarter. Five different Rangers scored during the run, capped by consecutive man-up goals.

The Hawks put together one final surge, using a 4-1 run to make it a four-goal game (17-13) with 9:38 left. But that's as close as they would get as the Rangers ended the game on a 3-1 spurt.
