Simmons and Champigny Score Nine as WLAX Beats Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Senior Hailey Simmons and sophomore Ella Champigny combined to score nine goals as the Drew University women's lacrosse team defeated Juniata College 16-11 in Saturday's Landmark Conference contest.

Both squads entered the day 1-1 in Landmark Conference competition. With their win, the Rangers move ahead of the Eagles in the standings at 2-1, while both teams are now 9-3 overall.

Senior Meliha Emini added two goals and two assists for the Rangers while senior Jenna Draney and sophomore Lizzy Barrett also contributed two goals apiece. Additionally, senior Kendall Hartt posted eight draw controls. But the story of the game was the dominance of Simmons and Champigny, as the duo almost single-handedly outscored Juniata.

Simmons got things started with back-to-back goals to begin the first period. The first came just 55 seconds into the game on a free-position attempt that saw Simmons dump it in after running right through the defense and the goalie. Less than 40 seconds later, Simmons again had a free-position opportunity and again converted after firing a blistering line drive into the net. Champigny would follow up with an FPG of her own at 10:21 to give Drew a 3-0 lead to start the game.

The pair was quiet in the second quarter as the Eagles came back to tie the game at 6-6. Then, at 12:06 in the third quarter, Champigny gave Drew back the lead after catching a pass from Simmons and punching one in from just outside the crease. After the Eagles retook the lead a few seconds later, Simmons would even things up at 8-8 as she took on four defenders single-handedly and somehow managed to sneak one into the net despite a lot of contact.

From there, Simmons and Champigny both added a couple more goals in the fourth quarter, including a short-handed goal from Simmons at 2:01 to give Drew its 16th tally of the afternoon. Overall, Simmons ended the day with five goals and one assist, while Champigny had four goals scored.

Not to be forgotten amidst all the scoring is junior goalkeeper Anna Horne, who earned her eighth win of the season after playing the full 60 minutes and making 12 saves, marking the fourth time in five games that she has finished with a dozen stops. Sophomore Catherine DiPatri added a career-high four caused turnovers

The Rangers will return to the field on Thursday at 4 p.m. when they host Catholic University in another Landmark Conference matchup.
