Women’s Basketball Pulls Away For Ninth Straight Win

TOWSON, Md. – The Drew University women's basketball team pulled away early in the fourth quarter and defeated host Goucher College 64-55 in a Landmark Conference tilt Friday afternoon.

The Rangers (13-1, 3-0 LC) have now won their last nine games, tying the second-longest winning streak in team history. In addition, they have posted the best 14-game start ever by a Drew women's basketball team.

Senior guard Joey Meyers paced the Rangers with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Senior guards Gwen Alberici and Katrina Wojtowicz added 15 and 10 points, respectively, while freshman guard Madelyn Morgan contributed 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Kyla Smith led the Gophers (3-12, 0-4 LC) with 17 points while Kyani Quarles recorded a double-double of 10 points and 20 rebounds.

Drew never trailed and opened up a gap late in the first quarter, when it closed on an 8-0 run to assume a 19-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Goucher closed to within four in the second quarter and the Rangers led 31-26 at the intermission.

Drew pushed its lead into double figures in the third quarter, when Wojtowicz completed a conventional 3-point play with 6:46 on the clock to make it 38-28. The Rangers would nudge their lead to 11 before the Gophers climbed back into it with a 13-2 run, making it 41-40 with 2:06 to go in the quarter. However, Meyers stemmed the rally when she hit two free throws with 52 ticks showing and Drew led 43-40 heading into the final period.

The Rangers took control early in the fourth quarter, when it opened with a 10-1 run. Four different players scored for Drew during the stretch.

Goucher refused to go away, however, and pulled to within six (59-53) with 58 seconds left. But Alberici iced it at the foul line, where she went 5-for-6 down the stretch.

Drew plays its second game in three days on Sunday, when it travels to the historic Palestra in Philadelphia to take on Landmark foe Moravian University at noon. The game is the opener of a quadruple-header of Landmark Conference games at the Palestra.
