MADISON, N.J. – Senior guard
Joey Meyers poured in 29 points, but the Drew University women's basketball team saw its school-record-tying 10-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of undefeated and fourth-ranked University of Scranton, 63-50, in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
Â
The two sides entered the night with a combined record of 29-1, and both teams were tied for first place in the Landmark Conference at 4-0 before the game.
Â
Meyers, who shot 11-for-20 for the night, posted the third-highest scoring total of her career while also grabbing nine rebounds.
Â
Junior forward
Jamie Struble added eight points and five rebounds for the Rangers (14-2, 4-1 LC) while senior guard
Gwen Alberici contributed seven assists and four steals.
Â
Maddy Ryan paced the Royals (16-0, 5-0 LC) with 19 points while Kaci Kranson notched 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
Meyers made her first three shots of the game, scoring Drew's first six points as the Rangers led 6-3 in the early going. But that's when Scranton used an 11-2 run to go up 14-8, and the Royals led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Â
Scranton extended its lead to 15 with 3:16 remaining in the first half. But the Rangers found a spark when senior guard
Katrina Wojtowicz and Meyers nailed back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minute to draw to within singles digits (28-19) at the half.
Â
Drew continued to chip away in the third quarter and pulled to within six when junior center
Gracie Hezel found Struble open under the basket for a lay-up to make it 32-26 with 6:27 left. The Rangers pulled to within six on two more occasions, the last coming on a bucket from Meyers with 3:33 left in the third quarter that made it 36-30. However, Scranton answered with the next six points and led 44-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
The Royals opened the final period on a 9-2 road to open up a 17-point lead. They still led by 16 with 3:08 left, but the Rangers refused to go away, as Meyers scored five straight points on a fast-break lay-up and 3-pointer to draw to within 11 with 2:03 left. But Scranton stemmed the rally by scoring the next four points.
Â
Meyers tacked on five more points in the final minute and ended up scoring 13 of her team's 16 points for the quarter.
Â
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference play on Saturday, when they host Catholic University at 2 p.m.
