HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Senior
Toby Gaynor raced to the top finish in Drew men's cross country history at the Landmark Conference Championships, posting a tremendous fourth-place showing among 98 runners on Friday at Juniata College.
Gaynor finished with a time of 26 minutes, 35 seconds for the tough 8,000-meter course, finishing just 27 seconds behind race winner Nathan Hajel of Moravian University. By virtue of his top-seven finish, Gaynor earned a spot on the All-Landmark Conference First Team for the first time in his career. He was a second-team all-conference honoree last season, when he finished eighth at the same meet.
The previous best finish by a Ranger at the Landmark Conference Men's Cross Cross Country Championships was Steven Monteleone's C'12 seventh-place showing in 2010. Gaynor's performance also marked the top finish by a Ranger at any conference championship since Kevin Purcell C'99 placed third at the 1998 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship.
As a team, the Rangers beat out Lycoming College and placed seventh among eight schools. On the strength of a 1-2 individual finish, Moravian edged Elizabethtown College by 11 points (37-48) for the team title.
Gaynor surged to an early lead over the first 2,000-meter loop, then settled into the lead pack of seven. He was in 10th place at the 4,000-meter mark, moved up to seventh at 6K, and was sitting on eighth place before unleashing a kick over the final 1,000 meters in which he surged past four runners.
Sophomore
Gaetano Allegri was the second Ranger to finish, placing 52nd in 29:37. Freshman
Thomas Edwards and junior
Ricky Ruto Talam crossed the line just six seconds apart, placing 63rd and 64th in 30:15 and 30:21, respectively, while freshman
Aidan Rosser was also in action, finishing 87th in 33:52.
The Rangers continue their season on Nov. 11, when they race at the NCAA Division III Metro Region Championships, held at Gloucester County Dream Park in Logan Township, N.J.
