MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort and stifling defense to beat Rutgers-Camden 74-40 in its season opener Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
Twelve different players found their way into the scoring column for the Rangers, who held the Scarlet Raptors to 27.1% shooting and forced 28 turnovers. Drew finished with 19 steals, which ties for the eighth-most in team history.
Sophomore guard
Maddy Morgan was the Rangers' top scorer, netting 13 points over 23 minutes of play. Freshman guard
Sarah Smout enjoyed a strong collegiate debut with nine points and four steals while senior forward
Jamie Struble registered an impressive all-around performance with eight points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Senior forward
Gracie Hezel added eight points and five rebounds while freshman guard
Amy Rachilla handed out seven assists. Sophomore guard
Maddie Beyer also dished out six assists.
Rahzirah Blocker posted a game-high 15 for Rutgers-Camden.
The Rangers took control right from the opening tip, outscoring the Raptors 12-0 to start the game. Struble scored Drew's first six points of the season. Rutgers-Camden closed to within eight but the Rangers ended the period on a 7-0 run to assume a 21-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Raptors drew to within 11 (27-16) late in the second quarter before the Rangers scored the last two buckets of the stanza and led 31-16 at the intermission.
Drew put the game away in the second half, when it outscored Camden 43-24. Leading 51-29 heading into the final period, the Blue and Green settled any doubt with a 23-point fourth quarter.
The Rangers return to Baldwin Gym on Saturday, when they host William Paterson University at 2 p.m. in a non-conference outing.
